ReSSL – Research Group for Surgical Simulators Linz

Within the project „Research Group for Surgical Simulators Linz (ReSSL) an internationally networked, interdisciplinary research group will be established at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria for the development of high-fidelity simulation systems. The ISTT will support the project with ist expertise in the fields of anatomy (realistic, artificial tissue; realistic bleeding), sensory and fluoroscopic simulation.

Vertebral fractures can occur as a result of osteoporosis, accidents or cancer. Due to demographic developments, the incidence of vertebral fractures increases by 3-5 percent annually. By injecting bone cement (kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty) the vertebral bodies can be stabilized. To prevent leakage of bone cement into the surrounding tissue, the correct positioning of instruments is essential. The position of the instruments is monitored under fluoroscopy. For the standardized training of the surgery a first simulation system „PatientSim“ for kyphoplasty was developed in a pilot project at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. The simulation system will now be further developed and supplemented by the ISTT-fluoroscopic simulator.

Course of action

The ReSSL project includes four work packages: the development of artificial bone and soft tissue; the development of smart surgical instruments; programming algorithms for fluoroscopy simulation, tracking and registration, and the validation of the developed simulator. At ISTT the focus lies mainly on the further development of the fluoroscopic simulator developed in the projects FORMAT and TOPINUS.
