KTS – Kheiron Training System

KTS – Kheiron Training System

For two years, the ISTT worked together with five European partners from Spain, Hungary, Romania, and Greece to develop and validate a serious game for laparoscopy. The aim of the KTS project (Kheiron Training System) was to develop an inexpensive and globally accessible platform on which future surgeons can train certain surgical procedures while being monitored and supervised by specialized training centers and trained surgeons.

Background

Serious games are essentially based on video game technologies, but do have quite a serious educational background. Through modern information and communication technologies (internet, wireless networks, etc.) they playfully impart knowledge and skills. The most popular example of a serious game is digital flight simulation which is successfully used in aviation training. Laparoscopy and minimally invasive surgery in general require special psychomotoric skills that shall be trained in future by using a serious game.

Course of action

All European partners contributed equally to the development of the serious game. The experiences and knowledge of the clinical partners (DSRT-SU, MEDIS) was complemented by the expertise of the surgical training centers (JUMISC, ISTT). All four partners analyzed user requirements for a serious game in co-creation workshops. Subsequently, these requirements were implemented into a game by the software company Avaca Technologies and the Technical University Madrid. The second aim of project KTS was the development of additional learning material and of an e-learning platform, which enables communication among young surgeons and specialists around the world.

Achievements

First, the user requirements for a laparoscopic serious game were analyzed in focus group interviews with approx. 60 medical students and young surgeons in Germany, Romania, Spain, and Hungary. Subsequently, the technical requirements for the game were defined and implemented. In December 2015 the first version of the game "The Alchemist" was presented and evaluated with surgical experts and medical students across Europe.
