InViFoSens – In vivo determination of tissue properties and physical forces in the human body

As part of the project InViFoSens a surgical measuring instrument will be developed to measure mechanical and haptic properties (stiffness, ductility, mechanical impedance) of human tissue in surgery. The project is a joint project of the ISTT with the Institute of Electromechanical Design at the Technical University of Darmstadt.


In surgical training simulation models are used in increasing extent. Thus, surgical procedures and risk situations can be standardized and trained avoiding risk to the patient. A prerequisite for realistic simulators is the exact knowledge of the intraoperative situation, including stiffness and tissue impedances and the forces and moments during operations. Only in this way the complex anatomy of the human body can be authentically simulated with synthetic material. Collecting such objective data on the patient is currently not possible. To achieve this and to be able to simulate the structures, biocompatible and sterilizable sensor technology is needed and will be developed as part of the project.

course of action

Within the project a functional prototype will be developed to measure the tissue interaction forces during an operation minimal invasively, intracorporealy and in vivo. The development of electronics and software will be done mainly by the ISTT, the mechanics and the sensor technology will be developed by the Institute of Electromechanical Design at the Technical University of Darmstadt.
